“We are the Stonewall girls We wear our hair in curls We wear out dungarees Above our nelly knees”
The Stonewall Inn is a famous, though some would say infamous, gay bar and tavern in the Greenwich Village of lower Manhattan and most well known for the Stonewall Riots, seen by many as the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the United States. The Building became a National Monument in 2016.
